Professional Biography

Colin commenced work as a solicitor in 1996.  He has experience across a broad practice canvassing the areas of employment, insolvency, commercial contract, dispute resolution and litigation, media law and defamation as well as company purchases and sales.

Colin has worked as a solicitor in private practice, industry organisations and for corporations and has as a result developed a diverse legal practice specialising in employment, workplace relations, OH&S and discrimination law. His experience enables him to provide strategic and practical advice to assist in the management and resolution of complex or difficult legal issues. This includes, where required, representative assistance including in the Fair Work Commission, VCAT, Federal Court and Federal and State Magistrates Courts.

Colin also enjoys providing assistance across all levels of HR and IR policy implementation including drafting and negotiating enterprise agreements, common law contracts as well as business policies and procedures.

Colin provides pre and post publication advice to clients in the media and to organisations promoting themselves through media sector and public statements identifying and resolving issues in defamation and copyright law.

Representative matters:

  • Acted for, and represented in FWC, a large rail operator to avert alleged unlawful industrial action.
  • Successfully represented a major public sector organisation in FWC in a complex contested enterprise interpretation dispute resulting in significant costs savings.
  • Represented and resolved a claim of significant impact to rail operators in Victoria in an application for review of decision of WorkSafe (Vic) in VCAT.
  • Successfully acted on behalf of a large private sector road and rail transport business where an ex-employee disclosed commercially sensitive information and defamed ex colleagues by publication.
  • Successful representation of individual employees of a large public sector employer opposing allegations of bullying filed in FWC.
  • Advised and successfully opposed claims in copyright alleged against a national print publication.
  • Acted as an independent investigator in a complex bullying and harassment complaint made by a staff member of a large employer in the Health sector, produced findings and recommendations which were adopted.
